"No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride... and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well... maybe chalk it up to forced consciousness expansion." That's my go-to belief as well. I do also remember a quote about how Hunter hated 'junkies' (can't remember where I read this.. I think it was "Campaign Trail '79")... even though he was a drug connoisseur himself, the idea he was trying to convey was that there was a difference between experimenting with drugs to expand one's consciousness, and doing drugs to numb the pain of life and other selfish excuses as a junkie does.

The Rum Diaries made me a semi fan as in I got what he was putting down but never really dove into his works. I think the quote was something like "I wasn't proud of what I learned but I didn't doubt it was worth knowing." that more or less stuck with me.
