Come to the question is technology being used to squeeze freedoms out of the general populace due to fear of terror and war. The misuse of technology has long been a subject of science fiction writing. Books we read in high school (1984 and Lord of the Flies), is that where governments are going? Totalitarianism and segregated/cast system for societies?

Lord of the Flies has very little technology in it -- really more Hobbsian in the view of 'life without society is 'nasty, brutish and short'. 1984 is much more predictive of where we are headed, and, one could argue, have already arrived.
